Beaufort County tourism groups must apply for grant by August 1

BEAUFORT COUNTY (WCSC) - Tourism related groups in Beaufort County looking to receive grants from 2011 state accommodations taxes have until August 1 to complete and submit their applications.

According to a release from the Beaufort County Council, the funds are collected from people who stay overnight in hotels, motels and inns who must pay 2% above the cost of their lodging. The money is used to help strengthen the tourism industry.

Applicants who submit an application, but do not receive an interview schedule by August 23 should contact Beaufort County Clerk Sue Rainey at 843-225-2180.

Southwest strikes deal with Charleston, Greenville

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Low-cost airline Southwest is moving into Charleston and Greenville within the next year.

In an announcement Tuesday afternoon at the Charleston airport, officials said they expected the new Southwest flights to be scheduled in 2011. The Dallas-based company said it would spend the next few months researching which cities should be part of its initial offering.

"This is a wonderful day for the citizens of the Charleston area," said Teddie Pryor, Sr., chairman of Charleston County Council. "Having a low-cost carrier is a quality of life issue, and it will benefit our residents every bit as much as it does the business community."

IRS help for small businesses

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is sponsoring a tax workshop for small business owners or prospective small business owners in the Charleston area on Friday, May 7, 2009, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the USC Small Business Development Center, 5900 Core Drive, Suite 104 in North Charleston.  

The workshop is designed to provide information and instruction about business taxes, tax benefits, and obligations connected with starting a business as well as tax responsibilities for new employers. Other topics to be discussed include tax record keeping and tax filing deadlines.
